Taiwan's first random stabbing spree on a subway, in Taipei's MRT system yesterday, shocked the commonly safe and peaceful country.

The 21-year-old attacker, Cheng Jie (鄭捷), university student, randomly stabbed passengers on the subway train on Wednesday afternoon. A fan of violent video games, he enacted a brutal scene in real-life inside a crowded train on the MRT's Banqiao Line (板南線). The four-minute attack led to four dead and 22 injured, with the victims' blood splattered all over the floor of the train.

According to police, the crime was premeditated. The suspect decided to conduct the attack yesterday because he had no classes. He bought two knives, then boarded the MRT, travelling from Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall Station (國父紀念館站) to Jiangzicui Station (江子翠站). Once the train left Longshan Temple Station (龍山寺站), the stop before Jiangzicui Station, he started stabbing passengers standing nearby. The passengers could only try to escape to other cars in the enclosed running train, while one injured passenger tried to fend off the attacker with his umbrella. It wasn't until minutes later when the train arrived at Jiangzicui Station that the terrified passengers could get out.

The attacker dropped his knife after leaving the train and was soon subdued by other passengers and quickly arrested by police.The suspect asked the police whether he would be sentenced death and kept repeating that he had wanted to do something big since he was little.
