Student Protests Turn Violent in Greece
12 Views • Oct 22, 2010
Description
Thousands of university students clash with police during a protest over the government's education reforms. They demand more funding.
Demonstrations in Greece's capital Athens start peacefully -- but Thursday's protests in front of Parliament quickly turned violent.
Students marching in protest of educational reforms -- that they fear will include education funding cuts -- strike police with flag post and hurl projectiles.
The students eventually relented after police retaliated with batons, pushing the demonstrators back with their shields.
Students are asking for more funding and resources for education at a time when the government is cutting public expenses in order to reign in massive debt.
They are saying education has long been a victim of insufficient government funding - and should be spared from austerity measures.
The university students say they will begin sit-ins at universities over the reforms, which are not expected to be announced until next month.
