Stereo vs Surround Sound

Some time ago, it appeared that everyone putting together a home theater was obsessed with having surround sound. These surround sound systems incorporate five (or more) speakers in an arrangement that allows the viewer to experience sounds from all sides. While these systems can certainly sound good, quality surround systems can be expensive and a hassle to set up, unless you don't mind wires laying across your living room floor.
