I am left, unable to love as before.
All this time, I have wanted love,
and now that it is at my door, I cannot
bring myself to answer,
I know it will not be you who is knocking.
It is a sad thing,
to come so close to your dream.
yes, i smile.
i still have laughter too.

To all outward appearances,
I've still plenty of wind in my sails.
but my heels and makeup
are the emotional lacquer
that covers up the dirt under my nails.
