Speeding train in India kills 7 elephants

Seven elephants were killed and 10 were injured by a train speeding through wildlife sanctuary in West Bengal, India on Wednesday (November 13) evening.

According to a One India News report, the Kaviguru Express train had been speeding at 80 km per hour when it collided with a herd of 40 elephants crossing the tracks in the Chapramari forest in Jalpaiguri. Two calves were among the seven elephants killed.

The train only stopped after one of the fallen elephants got stuck beneath it.

India's railway ministry requires trains to maintain a whistle and to travel below the 40 km per hour speed limit when passing through elephant corridor, according to Forest Minister Hiten Burman in a One India News report. A preliminary probe near the site detected that the train had been speeding at the time of the incident

Passengers on the train were picked up by a relief train sent from Alipurduar.

Since 2004 more than 50 elephants have been killed in West Bengal state alone.
