Spanish Fly 101

Spanish Fly. We’ve all heard of it, but what actually is it and is it as dangerous as it is made out to be? In this short piece we will do our best to answer both of these questions.

Spanish Fly - What is it? In short, it is a mysterious aphrodisiac that is made from the crushed up bodies of the blister beetle. It has been used centuries as a sexual aid on both animals and humans; is actually extremely dangerous, and is currently banned in most countries. In short, it works (in a way), but it can cause potential lethal side effects.

Spanish Fly - What are the side effects? There are a plethora of side effects that can be experienced when taking Spanish Fly. If taken externally, i.e. rubbed on the skin, then it will cause blistering due to the fact that it is a potent blistering agent/irritant. Taking it this way is unlikely to kill you, however consuming it is where the real danger lies. There are too many possible side effects to mention, so we will keep it short and sweet and include on the ones we feel will shock you. Death. The active ingredient in Spanish Fly is called Cantharidin, and within this is a tiny amount of a poison which can be as deadly as cyanide. Take enough of it and you’ll find yourself six feet under. Non-death related effects also include miscarriage, kidney failure, eyesight problems, uncontrollable vomiting and neurological problems. As you can see, Spanish Fly isn’t something to be messed around with! Luckily it is now banned and therefore actually getting your hands on it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible - but even if you do we suggest you stay away from it!
