Smithsonian Institute Unveils 9-11 Artifacts

To the U.S, where the Smithsonian is marking the 9-11 anniversary with an exhibit of artifacts recovered from three crash sites. The exhibit will allow visitors an up-close look of selected items.

The Smithsonian Institution in the U.S. has unveiled a new display on Thursday to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks.

The exhibit, "September 11: Remembrance and Reflection" features 50 objects from New York, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania connected to the attacks.

The exhibit has objects on display without protective glass casings for visitors to get a more personal view of the unusual artifacts.

Items on display include a video camera used to capture the only video of the first airplane hitting the North Tower of the word Trade Center as well as former New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani's cell phone he used on September 1.

A fire truck door from a Brooklyn truck that was buried in debris after the towers collapsed is also on display.

Items from the Pentagon include a clock that was frozen in time at 9:32 am, the moment the plane crashed into the Pentagon and medallions that melted together in the intense heat from fire that burned a portion of the building.

From the Shanksville crash site, items included a flight attendant' handbook and log book recovered from debris as well as seat belts from the doomed Flight 93 and a portion of the plane's landing gear.

Bill Yeingst from the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History said these otherwise ordinary objects hold significant importance.
