"Sleeper"

Since it was the first Sunday of the month, our visit to MACVAL was free of charge. On these "heritage days," many sites and attractions do not ask for admission to be paid. MACVAL is Le Musée de L'Art Contemporain and is located just outside Paris in Vitry-sur-Seine, in an ultra-modern, impersonal-feeling area with many Asiatic residents and businesses. A tramway or bus can get you to MACVAL easily from in and around Paris. The website for the museum is macval.fr.

Photos and videos are permitted here without flash. There is a large permanent collection and temporary shows, a garden, it's accessible, you can eat or picnic neatly there, there's a médiathèque/documentation center, and it's usually only five euros to get in. This might be that "something different" you seek in the Paris vicinity -- the contemporary art here is certainly "the latest," and this place always seems to bring a smile to our faces. At first, a lot of the works seem absurd, pointless or incomprehensible, to be sure.
