Though not in her employ by name, we all are in substance pupils in science, and we are fashioned by her. She is, so to speak, the spiritual mother: for I went to her for aid when perplexed, and for comfort when troubled; and I never returned empty away.

I had to pass through troubles and doubts somewhat similar to those with which she, with broader knowledge and greater strength, has fought her way; and perhaps of all the people who have cause to be grateful to her, none has more than I.
