Shut Arya Samaj temples: Khaps over same-gotra marriages

Haryana's dictatorial khaps are now at loggerheads with the Arya Samaj, they want the Hindu religious sect's temples to be shut down as they believe the Arya Samaj promotes inter-caste and love marriages. The demand has been made in an all caste meeting of khaps of several villages in the state's Jajjhar district..but the Arya Samaj is opposing the demand tooth and nail. The khap leader stated that priests in the temples must adhere to certain guidelines while solemnizing marriages, which include presence of parents of the bride. The khaps have got proactive after the Supreme Court recently directed the Centre to curb the role of khap panchayats in issuing diktats against same-gotra couples.
