Sharp uptick in MERS cases may point to virus mutation

Saudi Arabia said on Friday it had discovered 14 more cases of the potentially deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in the kingdom, according to a Reuters news report.

Out of 350 cases reported worldwide in the last two years, 50 of those have come within the last week or so, and the World Heath Organization is very concerned according to a statement it released on the subject this past Thursday.

The cause for alarm is due to its predecessor and distant cousin, the SARS virus which killed almost 800 people in 2003. Scientists then didn't have a handle on the path of transmission until well into that epidemic, and don't wish to repeat the same mistake twice. They believe the recent spate of MERS cases could signal a mutation of the virus has taken place and now is being transmitted between humans.

Normally the virus is contracted by those who deal with camels, since those animals are the natural carriers of the deadly organism. However it is increasingly showing up in the healthcare workers who are treating these patients as well.

Symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath and other pneumonia like issues, and those who have contracted the ailment should be treated in isolation.
