Description

About 170 passengers are reported to have been injured when one subway train ran into another in the South Korean capital.

No-one appeared to have been seriously hurt.

Fire service officials said many of the injuries were sustained when people jumped from the trains onto the tracks.

(SOUNDBITE) SOUTH KOREAN OFFICER OF GWANGJIN FIRE STATION, KIM KYEONG-SOO, SAYING:

"As of 17:50 (0850 GMT), 172 people are slightly wounded, no one is seriously injured, and those who are slightly wounded have mild abrasions from the crash."

At least one of the carriages was derailed by the force of the impact.

Witnesses said one train was leaving a station in the east of Seoul when it was hit from behind by an incoming one.

One witness said an onboard announcement initially told passengers to stay inside but many ignored it and forced open the doors.
