Self-immolating Tibetan protester dies
Description
PLEASE NOTE, THIS EDIT CONTAINS CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIAL
Tibetan protester Jamshel Yeshi died on Wednesday (March 28), two days after he set himself on fire.
He was protesting against Chinese rule in Tibet.
The activist was filmed running down a street, his body set ablaze on Monday (March 26).
He was admitted to a hospital with 98 percent burns, and died after suffering a cardiac arrest.
He timed his self-immolation for the arrival of Chinese President Hu Jintao in India, for the summit of BRICS emerging economies.
Tibetan exiles in Dharamsala held a demonstration in remembrance of Jamshel Yeshi.
They appealed to the United Nations for intervention in Tibet.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) TIBETAN WELFARE IN EXILE, SOANM, SAYING:
"A young Tibetan who's from Tibet, gave up his lift. So, we are appealing to the United Nations, we are appealing to the Chinese government to please give human rights and democratic situations in Tibet. Please improve all those things. This is the kind of appeal that is going on."
India hosts a large community of Tibetans, including the Dalai Lama -- which is a main source of friction with China.
The self-immolation protests in China in recent months have the potential to destabilise the restive Tibetan region, and Beijing has labeled the protesters "terrorists".
