Description

Southeast Georgia is sweating through blistering temperatures with heat indexes soaring into triple digits.

The National Weather Service says high temperatures in Savannah should hit 96 degrees today. Factor in the heat index, and outside it could feel like a blistering 102 degrees.

Local officials weren't taking any chances. City Hall said six neighborhood centers across Savannah would open Saturday as cooling stations for anyone who doesn't have air conditioning. The centers were scheduled to open from noon until 4 p.m.

The rest of southeast Georgia should see similar heat. The forecast calls for high temperatures of 97 degrees in Statesboro, 98 degrees in Jesup and 99 degrees in Waycross.
