Scientists create telescopic contact lens
32 Views • Oct 07, 2013
Description
The telescopic contact lens has two regions. The centre allows light to pass straight through, which provides normal vision. The edge acts as a telescope and magnifies the light using a patterned aluminum mirror. The image is magnified 2.8 times to the edge of the retina at the back of the eyeballs.
The contact lens itself is only 1.17mm thick, which allows it to be worn comfortably. Special glasses need to be worn in order to switch between normal and magnified visions. Liquid crystals in the glasses electrically change the polarization of light, which allows the glasses to selectively block part of the lens to create normal and magnified vision.
The telescopic contact lens is believed to be able to improve the vision of patients with age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, a condition that usually affects older adults, resulting in a loss of vision in the centre of the visual field due to damage to the retina.
