Islam is one of the major world religions, founded in the 7th century CE in the Arabian Peninsula. It is based on the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, who Muslims believe is the final prophet in a long line of prophets including Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. The central text of Islam is the Quran, which Muslims consider the literal word of God as revealed to Muhammad.

Islam teaches that there is only one God (Allah in Arabic), who is both all-powerful and merciful. Muslims follow five core practices known as the Five Pillars of Islam:

1. **Shahada**: The declaration of faith, stating that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His prophet.
2. **Salah**: The performance of ritual prayers five times a day.
3. **Zakat**: The giving of alms or charity to those in need.
4. **Sawm**: Fasting during the month of Ramadan from dawn until dusk.
5. **Hajj**: The pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca, which is required at least once in a lifetime if one is able.

Islamic law, or Sharia, guides many aspects of daily life and ethical conduct. The religion emphasizes community, compassion, and justice. Muslims gather for communal worship at mosques, and their practices and beliefs shape many aspects of their cultural and personal lives.
