Scarlett Treat - Another Life

They heard the young girl's screams,
filled with panic and fear,
but the city dwellers
kept their windows
shuttered and dark
so they would not see.

The shadows, those who drifted
from alley to doorway,
and watched in silent joy
the picture of someone
besides themselves in pain,
laughed in horrific glee.

As the knife plunged
deeply into her breast,
and life left the girl at last,
the shadows went on their way,
pleased that the night had
claimed another innocent one.

No one cried
but her mother,
and her tears were only
tears of violent anger
and frustration
at her situation in life.
