Description
Origins: The tale of Sassui Punhun is one of the seven popular tragic romances of Sindh, often referred to as the “Seven Queens” of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s poetry1. It’s a story that has been passed down through generations, capturing the hearts of many with its themes of love, separation, and devotion.
The Story: Sassui, the daughter of the Raja of Bhambore in Sindh, was found as a baby in a wooden box floating in the river by a washerman, who raised her as his own1. She grew up to be stunningly beautiful, attracting the attention of Punhun, a prince from Kech, Balochistan1. Punhun, hearing of Sassui’s beauty, traveled to Bhambore and, through a clever ruse involving his clothes needing washing, managed to meet Sassui. The two fell deeply in love and were soon married1.
The Separation: However, their happiness was short-lived. Punhun’s brothers, disapproving of the marriage, intoxicated Punhun and took him back to Balochistan while Sassui was asleep1. Upon waking, Sassui found herself alone and set out on a perilous journey across the desert to find her husband.
The Tragic End: The story culminates in a heart-wrenching tragedy. As Sassui, exhausted and overcome by the harshness of the desert, collapses and prays for death, the land is said to have split open and swallowed her1. Meanwhile, Punhun, who had escaped his brothers’ clutches, arrived too late. Finding the spot where Sassui had disappeared, he too prayed for death and was reunited with her in the afterlife as the earth took him as well1.
Legacy: The story of Sassui Punhun is not just a folktale; it’s a poignant narrative that has been immortalized in literature, music, and art across the region. It reflects the enduring power of love and the human spirit’s capacity for enduring loyalty and sacrifice. The tombs of Sassui and Punhun in Sindh are visited by lovers and those who seek the blessings of true love1.
This tale, while rooted in the local traditions, speaks to universal emotions and has been retold in various forms, including poetry, stories, and songs, making it an integral part of the cultural fabric of Pakistan. It’s a story that continues to inspire and move people to this day.
