The Samuel Risley a Canadian Coast Guard Icebreaker continues work in Thunder Bay on March 23-24th, 2019. in Thunder Bay harbour the Coast Guard reports that up to 18 inches of ice is being broken. On the trip from Sault Ste Marie, the Samuel Risley encountered ice as thick as eight to ten feet at Whitefish Point.
