Apple's come off the winner of sorts in the latest round of its battle with Samsung over mobile phone patents.

A jury in the U.S. has ordered Samsung to pay more than $119 million for infringement of two Apple smartphone patents.

The judge ruled a third had been infringed before the trial began.

But the payout is far less than the two billion dollars Apple had sought.

It's now up to the judge to decide whether to ban on sales of Samsung phones in the U.S.

Some legal experts say that's unlikely to happen.

In the same case Apple was ordered to pay Samsung just under $160, 000 over violations of streaming video patents.

Apple and Samsung have been fighting each other in the courts worldwide for three years.

Some industry observers see the legal wrangle as an attempt by Apple to curtail the growth of phones based on Google's rival Android software.

The shortfall in damage
