Samantha Bursich - Thoughts Preventing Sleep

In fifty years…
we could both eat off the senior menu at Denny’s.
We could be broken,
Blistered,
belligerent…
but we’d be very much in love
after quite a lifetime together.
We could bicker about the environment
and those goddamn kids,
but we’d remember
the lost children we were
until we found one another;
and we would smile.

In twenty-five years…
we could be sitting in the backyard
sipping vodka lemonades
with little paper umbrellas;
praying the tiki torches
keep the armies of Japanese beetles
away from the landscaping.
We make love to the Eagles
and find what we lost.
We thank god for our screened in porch,
and we laugh about the old days
and hard times.

In ten years…
you could be in the middle of your midlife crisis.
I wasted the best years of my life.
We’re out of money,
we’re not happy,
and we’re no longer in love.
Neither of us has gotten laid in a while.

In five years…
I could finally have you.
We’d both be secure,
for our feet are finally closer
to the ground.
I’ve lost everything.
So have you.
But we’re ready for this adventure…
together.

In one day…
I can think about you
and immediately smile.
No matter how much it drives me crazy,
and how unsure I am,
I accept this challenge
with our song in my heart.
