Banged-up pickup truck
Parked near the pumps
At truckstop cafe, travelers
Peering in at a baby deer;

Old farmer who lived nearby
Found the fawn standing alone
By its dead mother lying in the forest,
Shot by some hunter;

He had picked up the creature,
Carried it home to raise
And to take for rides to lunch
In his banged-up pickup truck.
