This sparring video there is a good amount of contact, I would label this video medium contact. Towards the end, it is intense, but it was still safe. He did get a few hits in and then I had to counter back to defend myself, so we were exchanging blows. The whole point of safe sparring is to simulate a real life fighting situation while maintaining your personal safety and the safety of your sparring partner. We are supposed to go intense but not too intense. Bumps, bruises, scratches, small cuts, headaches, bloody lips, etc. are expected but no serious injuries such as broken bones, concussions, knockouts, etc. are supposed to occur.

This former student enjoyed this type of training, he enjoyed the challenge, and really that is hard to find nowadays, very few people I encounter are fit for this sort of training, but I would say it is a necessity to truly develop to become a Martial Artist. You can hit the punching bag all day, but you will never receive the type of benefit of having an experienced Martial Artist exploiting the weaknesses of your defense by striking you. But yet not striking to hurt you badly but to just stun you enough to wake you up and take the sparring more seriously.
