Sae Amakura - Light and Dark

As a child, there was only light
Each day was filled with laughter, new adventures
Each day was one to look forward too
And time moved by swiftly

As I grew older, I stopped seeing the light
At first it was almost unnoticable,
Like a small shadow creeping up the wall
But soon that small shadow grew, and it enveloped me

This darkness was not like the darkness of the night
It was not calming and peaceful
Instead it was suffocating, as if someone held a pillow over my head
It was like wearing a dark veil that I couldn't see out of

As time went by, the darkness grew ever stronger
I felt the coldness from it creep into my heart
Soon there was nothing left but an empty shell
And the fake smiles I painted on myself to fool those around me

So many times I dreamed about that warm light from when I was a child
I dreamed I was basking in the glowing sun,
In a beautiful field of tall grass, with the summer breeze caressing my cheek
But these were just dreams, and soon enough I was once again swallowed by the darkness

Time moved slowly, and I saw nothing but grey
Nothing held signifigance anymore
Nothing really mattered
I felt completely and utterly alone

I was alone

Then one day, I saw a small shimmer of light
It wasn't very bright, but it was enough to break through the dark, in only for a moment
That light, though it was small and fleeting, has been seared into my mind ever since
I long to find it once more

Maybe someday I'll find that light again
Until then, I will continue to move through the darkness
That envelops my heart and soul and leaves me feeling as though
I were nothing more than an empty shell

I shall endure this, if only to find that warm light from my childhood
Once again
