Long islands and olive martinis
are the summer night favorites.
Once in awhile, you get the—
“Hey one more round of Guinness this way! ”

I throw a smile over my teal collared shoulder—
I save them up during the day for this very occasion,
then they dropp like twenties on the marble table tops.

Balancing a tray of drinks in one hand,
I whisper to myself, “Steady, Sus, Steady.”
I’m on the control side tonight
—yet life is hardly less fragile.

The bar is the invisible chain link where college meshes real world
and the men and women find themselves teetering the mezzanine,
dissuading the future—armed with shot glasses and beer bottles.
