Russia Vetoes Syria Draft Resolution
1 Views • Apr 12, 2017
Description
Russia stopped a United Nations draft resolution condemning the suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria, vetoing the measure on April 12.
The vote came as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson wrapped up a meeting in Moscow.
Tillerson said during a joint press conference there was “a low level of trust” between the two countries, although Lavrov said the pair had agreed on the importance of an investigation into the attack, which the US blames on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, a Russian ally. Lavrov warned there should be no repeat of the US airstrike on a Syrian base following that attack and said his country was not convinced Assad was responsible.
