Akhmat special forces commander Major General Apti Alaudinov has issued a stark and controversial warning, claiming Russia’s greatest existential threat does not come from NATO’s military power, but from internal subversion allegedly cultivated by the West over decades. Speaking about national security and unity, Alaudinov argued that Russia is impossible to defeat through conventional warfare due to its vast resources, nuclear deterrence, and modern weapons systems.
According to Alaudinov, Western adversaries have instead focused on building internal networks inside Russia over the past 30 years, designed to destabilize the country from within at a critical moment. He described this as a deliberate long-term strategy aimed at provoking internal collapse rather than direct military confrontation.
The Akhmat commander stressed that Russia’s survival depends on unity across ethnic, religious, and regional lines, warning that slogans promoting exclusivity or division only serve the interests of Russia’s enemies. Drawing on his experience commanding a multi-ethnic force made up of Chechens, Russians, Central Asians, and soldiers from across the post-Soviet space, Alaudinov said the front line proves that national unity is essential for resilience.
He also framed Russia’s internal vulnerability within a broader geopolitical context, pointing to the country’s vast landmass and immense natural resources, including a significant share of the world’s fresh water. Alaudinov suggested that these riches make Russia a permanent target for external powers seeking to weaken or fragment it through internal discord.
The remarks reflect a growing emphasis within Russian security discourse on internal threats, ideological cohesion, and total mobilization. Analysts say such statements also serve to rally nationalist sentiment, discredit dissent, and justify tougher internal security measures as Russia continues to face pressure from the West amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
