"Russia's Lost Princesses" is a two-part documentary series broadcast on BBC Two in 2014, focusing on the lives of Tsar Nicholas II's four daughters: Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia.
The series combines interviews with historians, archival footage, and dramatic reconstructions to reveal the realities behind the fairy-tale images of the Romanov sisters.

The first episode, titled "The Gilded Cage," explores the sisters' isolated childhood, shaped by the birth of their brother Alexei, who suffered from haemophilia, and the family's intense secrecy surrounding his condition.
This seclusion led to the family living in a "gilded cage," with the girls having few friends and little contact with the outside world.
Their only close confidant outside the family became Rasputin, the controversial spiritual advisor whose influence over the family, particularly the sisters, caused significant concern among the extended Romanov family.

The second episode, "The World Turned Upside Down," covers the final four years of the sisters' lives, from the outbreak of the First World War to their brutal execution in July 1918.
The war disrupted their sheltered existence, and Olga and Tatiana volunteered as Red Cross nurses, briefly experiencing life beyond the palace gates and forming close bonds with the soldiers they cared for.
The March 1917 revolution ended Romanov rule, leading to the family's house arrest and eventual exile to Siberia, where they were held captive in near-total isolation until their execution.
The documentary uses historical accounts and personal letters to portray the sisters not just as symbols of a lost empire, but as young women with complex personalities and experiences.
