STORY: Russia's President Vladimir Putin arrived in Brasilia on Monday ahead of the BRICS summit to meet with Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff.
Putin was welcomed at the presidential palace by Brazil's honor guard and received a 21-gun salute.
Rousseff greeted the Russian leader and other officials before a private meeting during which the two were expected to discuss bilateral agreements.
Putin's visit to Brazil is part of a wider Latin America tour that started in Cuba and Argentina and included an unscheduled visit to Nicaragua.
His visit started just after Ukraine's defense minister said on Monday that a Ukrainian AN-26 plane, taking part in the military campaign against separatist rebels, had been shot down by a rocket which was "probably" fired from Russian territory.
Crew members from the military transport plane had been in contact with the army's general staff, the minister, Colonel General Valery Heletey,
