Rousseff promises to meet with protesters
Description
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff urged calm and addressed growing concerns during a speech Friday after a week of massive protests.
It is the citizens, not the economic power that should be heard first, she said.
But she also made clear that violence related to the massive demonstrations would not be tolerated.
More than one million people have marched or demonstrated over issues ranging from transportation fares to the billions of dollars being spent to host upcoming World Cup and Olympics.
During her speech Rousseff said the money spent on those events would come from companies and not the public federal budget.
Rousseff, herself a former guerrilla who protested the military rule during the 1960s, has promised to meet with protesters to find common ground.
