Broken Reflections

If every lake was ever still
and sky was ever frozen hard,
then what would make our dreaming fill
in rippled wonder’s altered yard?

For each would be embraced the same
as icy mirrors fixed in crime;
no matter whereabouts we came
we’d always be squeezed firm in time.

And there a change would never come
where old was older still in death,
and dry as stalks in summer sun,
we’d never take a lively breath.
