Romania backs US anti-missile plan

Romania's President has agreed to host US interceptor missiles, as part of Washington's plan for a missile defence shield in Europe.

President Traian Basescu said the plan was approved by the defence council. However, it still needs parliamentary approval.

The move is likely to anger Moscow despite US and Romanian assurances that the missiles will not be aimed at them.

The US scrapped a previous missile shield, based in Poland and the Czech Republic, which had angered Russia.
