Synopsis :
Francesca, une femme de chambre, vole un collier dans un hôtel et s'enfuit avec son amant Walter. Ils trouvent refuge dans les rizières de la plaine du Pô, au milieu des ouvrières agricoles employées au repiquage du riz. L'une d'elles, Silvana, dénonce Francesca, puis devient la maîtresse de Walter....
