Rio prepares for big events

Rio de Janeiro is laying out the welcome mat for the world. This week , it will be hosting the UN's largest ever
environmental conference, Rio plus 20.

The conference is a test of how well this city of over six million people can accommodate the world cup in 2014, and the olympic games in 2016.

Rio's mayor, Eduardo Paes, says his city can handle big events. But while improvements are being made to the city's transportation and sanitation systems, some community activists say Brazil is wasting money on costly extravaganzas and failing to address issues such as social development.
