a masked man
walks among
passersby
noticing faces

hoping somehow
to uncover
familiarity
in their eyes

lines etched
from worry
anguish
guilt
laughter

the mask
is his own face
sullen from his
task of locating
others of his ilk

looking for a familiar
reflection
in their eyes
echoes in voices
fading out

acceptance
that this is a just
pursuit
