Sometimes you have to take one step back to move two steps forward. Richard Walters wrote much of his new album, Pacing, in 2007, two years before the release of his critically acclaimed 2009 debut, The Animal. But the 28-year-old singer-songwriter from Oxford never finished it because both he and his then collaborator, ex-Suede guitarist Bernard Butler, were diverted by other projects. However, when Butler contacted Walters again at the beginning of this year, they agreed that they had, literally, some unfinished business. "He'd recently rediscovered the old songs we'd recorded together and thought they still had potential. He says he thinks there might be a hit in there."
Whereas The Animal was softly spoken, largely acoustic and frequently introspective, the new songs are bolder and more immediate, featuring both Butler's trademark riffs and, a first for Walters, a large dose of electronics. "It feels like a genuine departure," says Walters. "When I write stuff on my own it tends to be quietly. I think of it as night music. This is more upfront. There are electronics...I've always been wary of using synths, I've never thought it would fit with what I do, but Bernard gave me the confidence to try it."
