'백신•치료제•진단' 기술이전...코로나19 정복에 힘 모아
South Korean researchers have joined forces in their battle against COVID-19.
Different institutes in the country are speeding up the commercialization process by transferring advanced technologies in the field of vaccines and therapeutics to private companies.
Lee Seung-jae reports.
A full-fledged move has started to find COVID-19 vaccine candidates,... along with improved treatments and diagnostic tests.
The first vaccine candidate that has been transferred to domestic companies for further research are synthetic antigen vaccines,... which could potentially be developed as vaccines for use by the public.
"It's likely we can develop a vaccine that has much more neutralizing antibody power and a better immune cell response than Albury-based antigens."
The latest vaccine candidate is shown to have three to five times higher ability to produce antibodies that can neutralize the activity of antigens than conventional antigen vaccines.
Newly synthesized vaccine candidates for COVID-19 from the Korea Chemical Bank are also attracting attention.
Researchers say when administered to kidney cells from monkeys,... it's 50 times more effective in killing the virus than Remdesivir,... a drug already in use for COVID-19 treatment.
Aside from their hopes for a vaccine,... South Korean researchers have continued to improve COVID-19 test kits,... and their effectiveness.
This includes a molecular diagnostic kit,... which was recently approved for emergency use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the WHO.
Researchers hope that vastly improved treatment,... better testing kits,... and vaccines may soon be available to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic.
