Avatars are becoming ubiquitous. In computer games, in navigation systems, and on homepages, virtual agents seek to make our lives in the digital world easier.Computer scientists in Augsburg now want to equip the computer figures with feelings to make them seem more human. Avatar Alfred can laugh, furrow his brow, and get downright angry. What sounds like a technological gimmick has concrete applications, and when an avatar displays emotion, it may win over users for the supposedly soulless technology.
