The crackdown remains a taboo subject in mainland China, as human rights activism is barely tolerated and activists are often criminalised.
"We haven't seen any progress in democracy Alliance in Support of or human rights." Lee Cheuk-Yan says.
"And with the heightened Patriotic Democratic suppression in China, it's even more important Movements of China
that people come out. When our Chinese compatriots cannot have a voice inside China,we become their voice."
Nearly a generation on, today's activists are hoping one day it will be restored in the capital city of a truly democratic China.
Al Jazeera's Rob McBride reports from Hong Kong, China.
