Relentless violence in Homs

Amateur video out of Syria appears to show the devastated streets of Homs.

The video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters, comes amid reports that at least 23 people were killed Monday across the country.

Residents in Homs, the bloody epicenter of the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad, say their city has been pummeled daily since June. There are reports of civilians trapped in their homes.

On Saturday the UN suspended its mission in Syria due to the violence.

UN spokeswoman Susan Ghosheh told Reuters both sides need to adhere to a ceasefire.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SUSAN GHOSHEH, UNSMIS SPOKESWOMAN, SAYING:

"Now, they know exactly what needs to be done. What is required is a decision. Once they take the decision and they're ready to release these civilians, we will be ready to monitor the release of these civilians but it's a matter of decision they have to take."

The UN says Syrian forces have killed more than 10,000 people since the uprising began last March. Assad's government says foreign-backed Islamist militants have killed at least 2,600 Syrian security forces.
