The Occupy Wall Street Movement is a now well recognized protest movement that began back in September 2011 in New York City’s Wall Street financial district. The Occupy protesters' slogan "We are the 99%" refers to the protester's perceptions of income disparity in the US and economic inequality in general. The main issues raised by Occupy Wall Street were social and economic inequality (as it had risen to the levels not seen since the Great Depression), greed, corruption and the perceived undue influence of corporations on government—particularly from the financial services sector.
