Where the wheat is separated from the chaff, 500 offroad specialists will also be raring to go. At Red Bull Hare Scramble – the final of the Erzbergrodeo in Eisenerz, Austria, on June 14 – the ‘Badewanne’ is not a place to relax and the ‘Märchenwald’ not an enchanted forest.

New routes, more checkpoints and only a handful across the finish line: these are the cornerstones of the most famous and probably also toughest enduro race in the world, the Red Bull Hare Scramble at Erzberg in Eisenerz, Austria. The four-hour martyrdom for the world’s best offroad riders begins on June 14 at the lowest of the 24 levels. This is followed by the Wasserleitung, Badewanne, Schrägaufzug, Munitionslager, Carl’s Diner, Roof, Gerichtsgraben and Märchenwald, just to mention a few of the total of 20 named checkpoints that the 500 finalists will have to overcome on the iron hill. And when the end siren sounds exactly four hours later, the riders who have crossed the finish line will comprise a minority – and be considered part of the selected circle of the Red Bull Hare Scramble finishers.
