The arrival of 2013 in India has been overshadowed by national shock and anger over the gang rape of a student who later died from her injuries.

The attack on the 23-year-old has unleashed a wave of protests that continued into New Year's Eve.

In New Delhi where the attack took place aboard a moving bus many called for celebrations to be muted or cancelled as a mark of respect.

Restaurant manager Amrish Kumar says it's a sign of how deeply the nation has been affected.

SOUNDBITE: ROUTE 04 MANAGER AMRISH KUMAR SAYING (Hindi):

"We're not celebrating this time. It's a formality to open the restaurant as usual. Our staff don't want to celebrate on the 31st because everyone is hurt. This is a formality and nothing else."

Other restaurants, hotels and clubs normally buzzing with party-goers also appeared quiet.

The government ordered the cancellation of army, navy and air force celebrations.

Other organisations also called off their own plans for parties.

Five men and a teenager have been arrested over the attack for which they're facing murder charges.
