Railway crossing level operated manually

Manual train signal and arrival confirmation system in place, over the railway phone line between stations in Uttar Pradesh, India.

Viewer Sachin Perinthalakkat writes: "This seems to be on a railway line which is not part of the so called main line, or trunk routes. The magneto phone (with the handle etc.) seems to be newer model. I have seen older ones (with bells, instead of electronic beeps). The signal man/gate keeper seems to be taking down the arrival of a train. Most likely the gate would be non-interlocked."

A level crossing or railway crossing is an intersection where a railway line crosses an existing road or path at the same level, as opposed to the railway line crossing over or under using a bridge or tunnel. The term also applies when a light rail line with separate right-of-way or reserved track crosses a road in the same fashion.

In most of the European and Asian countries level crossings are operated automatically, but level crossings in India are still largely manually operated, where the barriers are lowered using a manual switch when trains approach.
