On Wednesday, Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, observed exercises including many mock launches of ballistic and cruise missiles by the nation's strategic nuclear forces.
According to the Associated Press, Russia's defence minister Sergei Shoigu informed Putin that the exercise was meant to represent a "massive nuclear strike" by Russia in reprisal for a nuclear attack on the nation.
It came after Putin's warning that he was prepared to defend Russia's territory with "all means available," a clear allusion to the nation's nuclear arsenals.
