After Dr Ragland informs Alex to weaken the leader first, he goes back to the abandoned military base to do just that and consume it. By doing this, Alex gains the infected vision.

Alex starts to consume the soldiers that are infected so that he knows the location of the actual hunter leader who abducted Dana.
