Protests over chokehold death rock NY, DC

Thousands took to the streets of New York City for a second day in a row in reaction to a grand jury's decision not to indict a white police officer over the choking death of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man.

Protesters say it is the latest in a series of troubling incidents nationwide.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) REVEREND JOSE HUMPHREYS, PROTESTER SAYING:

"This is a systemic issue and people often think that we're trying to criminalize the police, and we're not trying to do that. We're trying to rail against a system that has created a culture that becomes violent against black people."

In the Nation's Capital, large crowds of demonstrators marched past the U.S. Justice Department, passed near the White House and filled the Fourteenth Street Bridge, a major artery into the city.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED PROTESTER SAYING:

"We are peacefully protesting that our lives matter. Police brutality is not OK, against black people, against anybody."
