STORY: Twenty-six protesters, who were detained on charges of organizing anti-government demonstrations that turned violent in the Turkish capital Ankara, appeared in court on Friday.

The protesters arrived at the court in police vans and were led into the building by police officers.

Protests have been more peaceful since anti-government demonstrators began standing still on main city squares in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir, taking their lead from a performance artist whose eight-hour vigil on Monday lit up social media and made him the new face of the protests.

What started as a small-scale action by environmentalists opposed to government plans to build on Gezi Park, a rare green space in Istanbul's teeming center, quickly became a broader expression of dissatisfaction with the government of Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan.

According to the Turkish Medical Association, the protests have left four people, including o
