Protesters mark Assad birthday with cake

Sunday marked the Syrian leader's birthday, as demonstrations against his rule continue across the country.
On Monday, the United Nations said at least 2,600 people have been killed since the pro-democracy protests broke out in March and Assad sent in troops to crush the unrest.
The figure is some 400 higher than earlier estimates, and almost twice that of the Syrian government, which blames the violence on "terrorists".
This video posted on a social media website shows people burning Russian and Chinese flags in protest at the countries' refusal to support sanctions against the Assad regime.
The red on the cake symbolises the blood of those killed during the six month crackdown, and the people are chanting, "Either victory or martyrdom."
The European Union and the United States have already imposed their own sanctions on Syria, but there seems to be no appetite in the West for military action such as the NATO bombing that helped topple Libya's Muammar Gaddafi
