"Proposal: Ban excentric names for children"

The head of Children's Rights in the Knesset, MK Zevulun Orlev, wants to protect children from their parents being 'too creative' when giving them names at birth. He explained that 'children do not have to suffer for their parents' 'moments of madness'. Demographics are certainly taken into account. So while certain names are in style in religious circles, the committee realizes that the same names don't bode well in secular circles and so on. According to the proposal, parents will need to explain the reasons for choosing a name to the committee if necessary, and that if the committee does not accept the reasons from the parents, a social worker is sent to explain the potential damage and to try to persuade them to change it. The proposal was made following numerous complaints that came to the Knesset regarding unusual names and the affect they have on children.
